Every month one of our wonderful volunteers Larry Darnell puts on a spectacular magic show full of wonders for patients and families to enjoy. They often say coming to the magic show is the highlight of their week at the hospital. Larry does magic shows throughout Birmingham for different schools and organizations so it was a perfect fit to have him perform at the Family Center. He has been volunteering at Children’s Harbor for many years. A big thank you goes out to Larry for donating his time and talent. Listening to the children laugh makes all the difference in the world to these families!

"I am a Birmingham-based children’s magician/puppeteer who, for the last few years, specializes in performing Character Education Programs in many local elementary schools. But long before that, I was part of a unique puppetry/skit group that provided high-energy, faith based shows for many local organizations and churches. Children’s Harbor was one of those groups that we performed for on a monthly basis….until our team disbanded a few years ago.
Children’s Harbor always held a special place for me personally and I missed coming here. When I started doing my school programs, I naturally thought of calling Darby Calhoun at Children’s Harbor and asked if she would be interested in having me return with a magic program….and so I am now back on a routine basis.
Serving at Children’s Harbor is an amazing thing for me. It brings life back into a proper perspective that usually seems to be taken for granted. Seeing and hearing the smiles and laughter from the kids and their families lets me know that I can help make a difference during some of difficult times that they face. Truth is, I probably get more from coming here than they do. I can say without a doubt that I have the best job ever. Thank you, Children’s Harbor, for allowing me to be part of such an amazing and caring place!"
