Children’s Harbor hosted 18 families from all over the nation and the world for RhizoKids, a camp and educational experience for those who have children with a rare and terminal form of extreme dwarfism called Rhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Punctata or RCDP.

The event was coordinated by Children’ s Harbor Program Specialist Morgan Stephenson and consisted of many Dr. Seuss inspired activities including a reading of “The Lorax” by two Vanderbilt students dressed up as Cat in the Hat and the Lorax.

These campers are dealing with very serious medical conditions that often rely on implantable cardioverter defibrillator to administers a therapeutic dose of electrical energy or “shock” when needed to restore normal heart function.

Learn More ›When a child leaves the hospital after physically recovering from their burns, they return to their schools, friends, and families where they are often the only burn survivor. Camp Conquest, held at Children's Harbor on Lake Martin, connects children and teens who have experienced the same injuries.

Days after the accident things took a turn for the worse. Will started to slur his speech and forgot simple things. After seeing a doctor, Will was diagnosed with a concussion.

During a routine visit with the family to offer support, Jenny Tudisco, a Children’s Harbor licensed professional counselor, learned how much these Legos meant to the five year old patient.
Learn More ›Graycen Bond, age 2, was diagnosed with heart disease which required a transplant. She is now back home in Kenner, LA. While she was a patient at the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children, Children’s Harbor Cardiology Counselor Jared Hood offered Music Together activities to Graycen and her family.
Learn More ›Bill Best makes wooden race cars, trucks, airplanes, animals, and Christmas ornaments for the kids of Children’s Harbor to enjoy. The patients love these wooden toys because they can customize them with paint, jewels, ribbon, etc at the Family Center. Counter Dimension’s in Pelham, AL, has continuously donated scrap lumber to him specifically for building the toys.
Learn More ›Beth Marsh and many of her friends toured our Family Center several months ago and learned that Children’s Harbor has a Beanie claw machine where every child gets 2 tokens a day. Because the machine is set up for success, every child often walks away with 2 Beanies which they love to take to their rooms, family, and friends.
Learn More ›After a hard battle, Sydney became cancer free on May 28, 2010. Although she is no longer taking treatments, Sydney is still involved with helping children battling cancer at Children’s of Alabama. She spends time helping with her foundation called Sydney’s Coins for Courage, which encourages children and their families battling cancer through Beads of Courage.
Learn More ›Caleb is a great example of the little miracles that happen continuously throughout our Family Center. Because of chronic pain brought on by his diagnosis of Henoch-Schönlein purpura, it had been very hard for Caleb to find the motivation to walk. Doctors, nurses and physical therapists tried and tried for a month to motivate Caleb to resume movement, but all of their attempts were unsuccessful. However, that changed when Caleb came to the Family Center for our remote control car race.
