Summer 2007:
Spotlight on Volunteers Will and Charlotte Denton

Charlotte Denton, who characterizes herself as a Type A
personality, was uncertain how she would adapt when she
retired from her position as director of infection control and
director of the tuberculosis division at the Alabama Department
of Public Health.

She and her husband, Will, who retired as an area
administrator for the department of public health, bought their
home on the lake with the idea of hosting family and friends.

But entertaining doesn’t take all of their time, and she
found there are some more important things to do than make
sure everything around the house is picture perfect.

"Because of the extreme generosity of Children's Harbor at Lake Martin, our organization Camp Bridges, has been able to send hundreds of chronically ill children to our summer camp each year since 1993. Without their donation it is very likely that we would not be able to afford our camp services that have proven to significantly impact the lives of the children and families that we serve."
(Mimi Rush, Executive Director, Camp BRIDGES)

Without the strong support that Magic Moments receives from Children’s Harbor, we would not be able to make this camp
weekend come true. Because it is our first goal to provide magic moments, it would be almost impossible for us to grant
wishes and provide a family camp weekend free-ofcharge to our families….For the past five years, Children’s Harbor has generously
donated all facilities to Magic Moments, which includes housing approximately 150 individuals during this one weekend.

(Pam Jones, Executive Director, Magic Moments)

In 2004, Vent Kids of Alabama provided the first ever ventilator camp in the State of Alabama at Children’s Harbor. We had over 100 people in
attendance. We joined an elite group of only 9 camps of its kind in the country. This groundbreaking event would not have been possible
without the help of Children’s Harbor.
(Kara Bishop, Director and Co-Founder, Vent Kids of Alabama)

8TH ANNUAL PIG IRON BBQ

The Pig Iron Barbecue Challenge to annually award the Best Backyard Barbecue in Birmingham looked like such fun that organizations in Montgomery held their own inaugural event this year on October 22, 2004. Business and other groups joined forces at the Farmer’s Market, and barbecued all day to to raise funds to help children with long-term serious illnesses and their families. By all accounts, the barbecue was delicious! Many thanks to everyone in each event!
